Long Memory
Long Memory. Long Memory is the wanderer's map of the world, drawn not on paper but in the bone. Every road they have walked is preserved in their mind — every turn, every ford, every shortcut through the pine forest that the locals have forgotten. Every face they have trusted is held with the same clarity: the innkeeper who fed them on credit, the farmer who pointed them to the dry cave, the captain who let them work passage for a week. And every door that was opened to them is remembered, with its hinge-squeak and its threshold and the smell of the room beyond. The wanderer can retrace any of these in the dark, in storm, in the confusion of a country at war. They have walked out of lost cities by following a road they walked once, twenty years before, and never forgot.
