Road-Tongue
Road-Tongue. Road-Tongue is the wanderer's chameleon gift. In any town or port, within an hour of arriving, they can be mistaken for a local. The accent settles into the right shape. The clothes, somehow, look right. The wanderer knows which alley to walk down, which tavern to enter, which greeting to offer the fish-seller at the corner. Strangers ask them for directions in the local tongue, and the wanderer answers without thinking. The gift does not make them invisible. It makes them belong, briefly, in a place that is not theirs. The belonging fades the moment the wanderer leaves — the next morning, the fish-seller will not remember their face. But for that one night, the wanderer is not a stranger anywhere, and that is the only home the road has ever offered them.
