Tyrant's Awe
Tyrant's Awe. Tyrant's Awe is the warlord's presence in a room, and it is the reason no one has ever successfully lied to their face. When the warlord enters, the clever go quiet. The loud lower their voices. Courtiers who would talk circles around a lesser ruler find their rehearsed phrases dying in their throats. The awe is not fear, exactly — though fear is part of it. It is the recognition, instinctive and unspoken, that this is a person who has measured the cost of disobedience in cities and in bodies, and has decided the math is acceptable. No one lies to the warlord's face, because the cost of being caught is well understood, and the awe makes the catching certain. The warlord does not need to raise their voice. The silence does the work for them.
